Re-inventing Grid Software to Power the Future

Harnessing the power of software-based intelligence to reliably optimize the existing grid for the cost-effective interconnection and operations of new generation and large loads

The 'Gridlock'

1. Surging Electricity Demand

The era of flat load growth is over. The U.S. electricity demand is set to triple in the next decade. Peak demand growth rates are exceeding 5x that of the past decade, requiring 20% higher peak load which is an additional 150 GW to be served by 2030. Data centers alone are projected to consume nearly 90 GW in the next five years, with average interconnection delays stretching to 7 years. Manufacturing demand is projected to grow by 20 GW, while other forms of load growth due to electrification is estimated to grow by an additional 20%.

To meet rising demand more generation is needed, but progress is stalled. Over 12,000 generation and storage projects, amounting to nearly twice the current installed generation capacity in the US are stuck in the interconnection queue. This queue has grown 8x in the past decade, with average wait times in the queue now exceeding 6 years. And, only 20% of the projects in the queue successfully make it to commercial operations, while the rest withdraw during the study process.

2. Growing Generation Interconnection Queue

Grid congestion is driving up costs. Thermal overloading on transmission lines forces utilities to curtail low-cost generation and rely on costlier alternatives. This has driven U.S. congestion costs to $10-20 billion annually, ultimately impacting ratepayers. As a result, electricity prices have surged nearly 3x in recent years.

3. Rising Electricity Rates Driven by Grid Congestion

A Key Driver Behind the 'Gridlock'

1920x1080.jpg

The grid’s growing congestion crisis stems from its unoptimized configuration and utilization, resulting in acutely limited grid capacity for new load and generation.

Conventional solutions - like building new transmission lines or reconductoring existing lines - can expand grid capacity, but they come at a high cost and with long timelines. For instance, new transmission lines can take 7–10 years to get built, requiring significant investment.

High costs and frequent delays lead to project withdrawals, trigger restudies, and worsen the interconnection queue backlog, which can ultimately stall the progress towards achieving the grid of the future.

Our Philosophy for ‘Unlocking’ the grid

Image-8.jpg

At GridAstra, we believe boosting grid capacity isn’t just about building new lines or reconductoring — it's also about maximizing the utilization of the existing grid.

By adopting alternative transmission technologies, we can unlock additional capacity much faster and much more efficiently. Our solutions work alongside traditional methods to accelerate interconnection and operation of new generation, storage, and large loads.

GridAstra’s approach leverages Grid Enhancing Technologies (GETs) to:

  • Re-route power flows from congested lines to under-utilized lines

  • Boost thermal line ratings, when conditions allow

This innovative strategy offers a faster and cheaper path to unlock grid capacity and enable a more resilient, flexible energy future.
